Tarnished Feminity
P.R.Rajeswari
–March 8 is celebrated across the world as the “International Women’s Day (IWD)” and provides an opportunity to recognise the achievements of women and their contribution to society. I regularly get emails and messages from my friends wishing me the very best on this day. On this day, women can celebrate the progress that has been made but also contemplate those areas of women’s lives where more can be done. Women’s access to education, health care and paid work has improved, and legislation that promises equal opportunities for women and respect for their human rights has been adopted. However, nowhere in the world can women claim to have all the same rights and opportunities as men, and on this day, it is quite essential that we ponder over those women folk, who are destined to live a tainted life abetted by cheating, poverty and abuses.
Here is one poem I wrote and dedicated to countless such women
Happiness keeps you sweet,Trials keeps you strong
Tarnished Feminity
As the dawn of march 8 steps in,
Women across the globe conjointly
Propagate the message of,
Equality, empowerment,
Joy and happiness.
Feminity is a curse and scourge
For many unnoted daughters
who can neither swash,
Nor celebrate women’s day.
Born as pure like you and me,
Fluttered like a butterfly
with dreams and hopes.
Reasons of livelihood and
The sinful acts of men
Made them impure and isolated.
Dwelling in the dark,

Dwelling in the dark,
Leading a life of constant submission,
Fear,shame and muted acceptance.
Nobody to share their pain and grieves,
No machine to animate and elevate their lives,
Not a soul to wipe their tears
And propel their desires…
yet they gape for words and actions of solace.
Gaging the body,
suppressing the sorrows,
bearing the stigma and scorn,
and folding the wishes,
they jog on to live the life..
Unworthy of living.
Can they erase their tainted mark
And hope for a better tomorrow?
Do we care to remove their stains?
Shall we spread light in their life
By accepting them ingenuously?
